Why Integrated Product Development is the Future of Medtech

New product development processes that are overly siloed are stifling medtech innovation. Here’s why and the steps you can take to get engineering, clinical, regulatory, marketing, and manufacturing all working in parallel from day one.

Look at any list of the top medtech innovations of all time and you’re almost certain to find cochlear implants. Some 1 million people around the world with severe or profound hearing loss have had their lives changed by what was the first commercially viable device to restore a human sense through direct neural stimulation.

That in and of itself would rank cochlear implants among the top healthcare innovations of all time. But cochlear implants are noteworthy for another reason: even as I write this in the summer of 2025—decades after they first appeared—the development of cochlear implants remains a textbook example of the kind of collaborative, multidisciplinary process model that’s essential for competing in today’s medtech market.
