The Challenge

SynCardia Systems needed a next-generation Freedom Driver to support their Total Artificial Heart (TAH-t) a life-sustaining device for patients awaiting heart transplants. The goal: replace a bulky, hospital-bound system with one that was smaller, lighter, quieter, and more reliable, enabling patients to regain mobility and independence without compromising safety or performance.

The Solution

Suntra MedTech Solutions partnered with SynCardia to develop a highly portable, patient-worn driver system that integrates a custom pneumatic pump, touchscreen interface, and advanced power architecture. We engineered a Class III medical system featuring triply redundant power, multiple processors for real-time safety monitoring, and a proprietary low-friction piston seal designed to operate maintenance-free for years. The entire platform was built with usability and freedom in mind from physical form factor to battery swapping mechanisms and alarm responsiveness.

The Impact

The result was a revolutionary, wearable driver that delivers precise cyclic pressurization through cannulae to power the TAH-t allowing patients to safely leave the hospital, maintain a mobile lifestyle, and live with dignity while awaiting a transplant. Suntra’s work helped SynCardia redefine what’s possible in advanced cardiac support.
