Organ Transplant System

Redefining What’s Possible in Organ Preservation

Organ Care System (OCS) machine manufactured by TransMedics, Inc., of Massachusetts

The Challenge

TransMedics set out to revolutionize the standard of care in organ transplantation. The traditional method transporting organs on ice often limited viability and increased complications. TransMedics envisioned a solution that would keep a heart warm and beating outside the body. They partnered with Suntra MedTech Solutions to help design and prototype the complex electronic monitoring and control systems that would make this vision a reality.

The Solution

Working closely with TransMedics’ software and UI teams, Suntra engineered multiple critical subsystems within the Organ Care System™ (OCS) Heart, including the main processor board that managed Bluetooth, SPI, and I2C data streams. We developed an analog board to monitor ECG, temperature, and humidity, and created a low-cost disposable interface PCB for the donor organ. The intelligent power management system featured triple redundancy, hot-swappable batteries, and sequenced battery handoffs ensuring uninterrupted operation during transport.

The Impact

The result was a first-of-its-kind organ transport system that keeps donor hearts, lungs, and livers alive and functional during transit. The device received both CE Mark and FDA approval, enabling longer transport distances and reducing complications post-transplant. By extending the viability and reach of donor organs, Suntra helped power one of the most transformative advances in modern transplant medicine.
